Weekend Waiver Wire

Welcome fantasy managers to another edition of the Weekend Waiver Wire. It is time once again to take a look at what goaltenders may be available as a streaming option this weekend to help you take down your fantasy matchups.

Let’s get to it!

Brandon Bussi - Carolina Hurricanes (3% owner on Yahoo / 17% owned on Fantrax)

The Carolina Hurricanes are currently carrying three goaltenders so Bussi may be the odd man out with Pyotr Kochetkov back from injury. That being said, if the team does turn to Bussi over the weekend he’ll find himself in a great spot, more than likely facing the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. The Hurricanes are a solid defensive outfit but that shouldn’t take anything away from the former Bruin as Bussi has put together a solid 3-1 record with a 2.25 goals against and .916 save percentage with three of his four starts being Quality Starts (games with a save percentage at or above league average). A rather solid pick up……..if he starts.

Casey DeSmith - Dallas Stars (8% owned on Yahoo / 18% owned on Fantrax)

When the Dallas Stars decide to give their workhorse Jake Oettinger a night off, backup Casey DeSmith is usually a fairly solid play in goal. DeSmith’s numbers won’t jump off the page but the veteran netminder is more than serviceable when it comes to adding a goaltender off the waiver wire. DeSmith currently owns a 2-1-1 record accompanied by a 3.15 goals against and .876 save percentage which again doesn't wow you but if your league is more weighted towards wins he is a rather safe play.

Jonathan Quick - New York Rangers (5% owned on Yahoo / 12% owned on Fantrax)

The New York Rangers are struggling to score this year especially at home where they have been shutout four times in six games. On the other end of the spectrum, the Rangers are ranked second defensively in the entire league at 2.43 goals against per game which is pretty damn stingy. Quick has certainly benefitted from coach Mike Sullivan’s defensive structure as the two-time Stanley Cup champion is sporting a miniscule 1.35 goals against and phenomenal .941 save percentage with one shutout. It’s only a matter of time before the Rangers start burying their chances and when they do fantasy managers will benefit greatly.

Vitek Vanecek - Utah Mammoth (5% owned on Yahoo / 15% owned on Fantrax)

The Utah Mammoth have been a must watch to start the year as one of the league most exciting teams. One new addition to this group is backup netminder Vitek Vanecek who was signed in the offseason to bolster Utah’s depth in goal which has benefited both the player as well as the organization. Vanecek is enjoying a decent start to the year with a 2-2 record accompanied by a 2.52 goals against and .885 save percentage. This is another situation where it isn’t so much the player as it is the team in front of him as the Mammoth find themselves just outside the top ten defensively while only surrendering 24 shots against per game. One would think that Vanecek would draw the Ottawa Senators on Sunday which would be a great landing spot with Senators captain Brady Tkachuk still on the mend. If Vanecek is still available, I would take a long look.
